Octopus (Octopus vulgaris)

Common octopus

Octopus have soft, bulbous bodies with eight long arms lined with suction cups. Their colour can vary from reddish-brown to grey, with the ability to change colour and texture to blend into their surroundings. They have no internal skeleton, giving them a distinctive, flexible form. The flesh is firm and becomes tender when properly prepared.

Octopus are found in coastal and offshore waters, often inhabiting rocky seabeds, reefs, and crevices. In Cornwall, they are most commonly seen in warmer months and are typically caught as bycatch in pot fisheries or occasionally targeted in small-scale fisheries. Their presence in UK waters has increased in recent years, likely linked to changing sea temperatures.
