Cornish King Crab (Maja brachydactyla)

Spider Crab

The Cornish King Crab, commonly known as the Spider Crab, is a large, spiny crustacean prevalent along Cornwall’s coastline. It can grow up to 80cm in claw span, featuring long, angular legs and a robust, spiky shell. The claws are filled with moist, white meat, highly prized in culinary circles, particularly in Spain and France.

These crabs inhabit the northeast Atlantic, favouring rocky substrates and sandy seabeds. They are commonly found around Cornwall’s coast, often residing in shallow coastal waters during warmer months and migrating to deeper waters in colder seasons.

Sustainability Rating

Best Choice: Crabs caught by potting methods in Cornish waters.

Avoid: Crabs caught using gill nets, as this method can result in bycatch of non-target species such as crawfish, rays, cetaceans, and sharks.
