Spider Crab
The Cornish King Crab, commonly known as the Spider Crab, is a large, spiny crustacean prevalent along Cornwall’s coastline. It can grow up to 80cm in claw span, featuring long, angular legs and a robust, spiky shell. The claws are filled with moist, white meat, highly prized in culinary circles, particularly in Spain and France.
These crabs inhabit the northeast Atlantic, favouring rocky substrates and sandy seabeds. They are commonly found around Cornwall’s coast, often residing in shallow coastal waters during warmer months and migrating to deeper waters in colder seasons.
Sustainability Rating
Status: The Cornish King Crab fishery is considered sustainable, especially when caught using pots. Potting has minimal environmental impact, allowing undersized crabs to be returned safely and causing no damage to the seabed.
Best Choice: Crabs caught by potting methods in Cornish waters.
Avoid: Crabs caught using gill nets, as this method can result in bycatch of non-target species such as crawfish, rays, cetaceans, and sharks.
Culinary Uses
The white meat from the claws is delicious and moist, making it a delicacy in various cuisines.
Commonly used in salads, soups, and seafood platters.
In the UK, it's an underutilised species, with the majority of the catch exported to Spain. Increasing its presence in local markets could benefit sustainable fisheries.
Best Fishing Practices
Potting is the preferred method, being low impact and selective.
Gill netting is less sustainable due to issues with bycatch and potential damage to the crab's quality.
Regulations include minimum landing sizes and licences for shell fishing, monitored by the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (CIFCA).
Seasonality
Available year-round, with peak catches from March to October.
