Red Mullet (Mullus surmuletus)

Striped red mullet

Red mullet are easily recognised by their vivid pink-red colouring, golden tones, and slender body shape. They have two distinctive chin barbels used to search the seabed for food. Typically growing between 20–40cm, red mullet have delicate yet flavourful flesh with a rich, slightly nutty taste.

Red mullet inhabit sandy, muddy, and gravel seabeds in warmer coastal waters. Around Cornwall, they are found mainly in the English Channel and western approaches, becoming more common in UK waters as sea temperatures rise. They are landed by small inshore vessels and mixed demersal fisheries.
